About the author

Born in Hornhausen on March 30, 1862, Wilhelm Friedrich Bode studied German studies and modern philology, earned a doctorate in 1884, and worked as a teacher in places including London and Mittweida. He later became known as a writer, campaigner in the abstinence movement, and a dedicated Goethe scholar.

Bode is sometimes called "Goethe-Bode" to distinguish him from the better-known art historian Wilhelm von Bode. He lived in Weimar and published extensively on Goethe and Goethe's circle, including biographical and interpretive works that helped shape his reputation as a literary researcher.

Alongside his literary work, he was involved in organized temperance advocacy and wrote on alcohol reform as well as literature. He died in Weimar on October 24, 1922, leaving behind a body of work that connects scholarship, public debate, and cultural history.
