About the author

Born in Salisbury, Maryland, on June 14, 1854, and later dying in Hartford, Connecticut, on December 23, 1929, he was an American educator and writer remembered for making history approachable for schoolchildren.

His books include American Leaders and Heroes, Stories of Later American History, History of the United States, and Abraham Lincoln. A Project Gutenberg edition of American Leaders and Heroes identifies him as principal of the North School in Hartford, Connecticut, and also notes that he was a co-author of A Pathfinder in American History.

Taken together, his bibliography suggests a career centered on teaching U.S. history through readable narrative rather than dry summary. That practical, classroom-minded approach is a big part of why his work still turns up in digital libraries and public-domain collections today.
