About the author

Born in Illinois in 1843, he served in the 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Later sources about him consistently connect him with Galena, Illinois, and with his service under Ulysses S. Grant during the western campaigns.

He is remembered chiefly for With Grant at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg, published in 1915. The book draws on his own experience as a soldier and stands out as a personal, on-the-ground narrative of major Union victories.

Crummer died in 1920. Though not a widely known literary figure, he remains of interest to readers of Civil War memoirs because his writing preserves the voice of someone who was there.
