About the author

Born in 1823 and living until 1906, Wendla Randelin was a Finnish writer whose career included both fiction and translation. She published novels under her own name and became known as one of the women writing for a growing Finnish reading public in the second half of the 19th century.

Randelin also worked as a translator and adapter, which made her part of the wider literary exchange of her time. Through that work, she helped circulate stories across languages and gave Finnish readers access to books and themes that were traveling through Europe.

Although she is not as widely known today as some of her contemporaries, her writing reflects an important period in Finnish literary history, when publishing expanded and more women found a place in print.
