Wanda Hazel Gág was born on March 11, 1893, in New Ulm, Minnesota, the eldest of seven children in an artistic family. After studying at art schools in Minnesota, she won a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York and built a career as an illustrator and printmaker.
Gág wrote and illustrated Millions of Cats, along with books such as The ABC Bunny, Nothing-at-All, and Tales from Grimm. Her work combined expressive drawings with the rhythm and charm of folk tales, earning her Newbery and Caldecott Honors.
She also created more than a hundred prints and published Growing Pains, a collection drawn from her early diaries. Gág died of lung cancer in New York City on June 27, 1946, leaving behind a distinctive body of art and children’s literature.
