About the author

Born in St. Petersburg in 1852 to American parents, Walter Winans built an international life that stretched across Russia, Britain, and the United States. He became widely known as a marksman, horse breeder, sculptor, and painter, and his range of interests gave him a reputation as an unusually versatile figure.

He competed in the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games in shooting, winning gold in 1908 and silver in 1912. He is also remembered for winning a gold medal in the 1912 Olympic art competitions for his sculpture An American Trotter, a rare achievement that linked his athletic and artistic careers.

Winans was especially drawn to horses, and that passion shaped much of his sculpture and collecting. He also wrote books, including works on firearms and shooting, and remained active in both sporting and artistic circles until his death in England in 1920.
