About the author

Born in 1862 near Wrexham in Wales, Walter Shaw Sparrow became a writer, painter, and critic with a strong interest in art and architecture. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and later in Brussels, experiences that helped shape both his artistic training and his writing.

Sparrow wrote many books on painters, architecture, interiors, and decorative arts. He was especially interested in British sporting art, but his work ranged widely, and he also edited Women Painters of the World in 1905, a notable survey that brought attention to women artists.

He died in 1940, leaving behind a large body of accessible art writing. His work still offers a window into how art, design, and taste were discussed in Britain during his time.
