About the author

Walter Scott Dalgleish was a British author and historian, born on March 25, 1834, and died on February 15, 1897. He is best remembered for educational and historical writing that was meant to be useful as well as readable.

His books show two strong interests: the teaching of English and the telling of history. Alongside textbooks on composition and grammar, he published historical works including Great Speeches from Shakespeare's Plays: with Notes and a Life of Shakespeare (1891), Great Britain and Ireland, 1689–1887 (1895), and Mediaeval England, from the English Settlement to the Reformation (1896).

Dalgleish also had close ties to education in Edinburgh, and his career reflects the Victorian belief that literature, language, and history should all be part of a serious education. Though not widely known today, he left behind a substantial body of practical, informative books for learners and readers of his time.
