author
1834–1897
A Scottish historian and educational writer from Edinburgh, he moved with ease between schoolroom English, literary study, and broad surveys of British history. His books have the clear, practical feel of a teacher who wanted the past—and language itself—to be easier to grasp.

by Walter Scott Dalgleish
Walter Scott Dalgleish (25 March 1834–15 February 1897) was a British historian and author educated at the Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh. He is remembered for a varied body of writing that joined literary interests with history and education.
His work ranged from school and language books to larger historical studies. Among the titles linked with him are Great Speeches from Shakespeare's Plays: with Notes and a Life of Shakespeare (1891), Great Britain and Ireland, 1689–1887, Mediaeval England, from the English Settlement to the Reformation (1896), and the much earlier Memorials of the High School of Edinburgh.
The surviving sources available here identify him as a historian, author, and contributor on Scottish education, but they offer only a limited personal record. No suitable verified portrait image could be confirmed from the pages reviewed.
