About the author

Walter H. Goater was a Brooklyn-based artist and illustrator whose work appeared in the late 19th century. Archival material at New York University identifies Walter Goater (1852–1933) as an artist and illustrator, and Library of Congress records also credit Walter Goater for illustrated scenes published in 1880s periodicals.

He is associated with A Short Treatise on Boots and Shoes, Ancient and Modern (published in 1884), a compact historical work that traces footwear from ancient civilizations to more modern styles. Project Gutenberg also lists him as the illustrator of A Short Treatise on Head Wear, Ancient and Modern by Anne C. Goater, suggesting the two collaborated on closely related works about everyday dress and fashion history.

Although little biographical detail is widely documented, the surviving record shows a versatile visual storyteller: someone who sketched public scenes, contributed to illustrated publications, and helped turn practical subjects like shoes and hats into accessible cultural history.
