About the author

Born in 1824 and dying in 1876, Walter Field was an English writer best known for Stones of the Temple; Or, Lessons from the Fabric and Furniture of the Church. Written in a clear, instructive style, the book explores church architecture and furnishings not just as objects, but as carriers of history, symbolism, and devotion.

Field was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was ordained in the Church of England. Alongside his religious and historical interests, he was also active in public life around Hampstead, where he worked to help preserve the natural beauty of Hampstead Heath.

That mix of interests helps explain the appeal of his writing. He approached sacred spaces with both scholarship and warmth, aiming to make their meaning understandable to general readers rather than specialists alone.
