About the author

Walter Dwight Wilcox was an American explorer, mountaineer, and writer best known for his work in the Canadian Rockies. Born in Chicago in 1869, he studied at Phillips Academy, Andover, and graduated from Yale in 1893, later continuing his studies at Columbia.

He became one of the early non-Indigenous explorers closely associated with the Lake Louise region, making first ascents and helping map and describe terrain that was little known to most readers of his day. His best-known book, The Rockies of Canada, helped popularize the region by combining adventure, observation, and a strong sense of place.

Wilcox remained closely connected to mountain culture throughout his life and was an original member of the American Alpine Club. He died in 1949, but his writing still offers a lively window into the early age of North American mountaineering and travel.
