About the author

An American mountaineer, explorer, and writer, Walter Dwight Wilcox spent much of his life returning to the Canadian Rockies and documenting what he found there. Records describing his papers identify him as a businessman as well as an explorer, and later book listings and library catalogs show that he wrote several works centered on the Rockies and the Lake Louise region.

His best-known books include Camping in the Canadian Rockies (1896), The Rockies of Canada (1900, later revised), and A guide-book to the Lake Louise region (1909). These books helped capture the excitement of early climbing and travel in western Canada, mixing practical knowledge with firsthand adventure.

Wilcox is also remembered for his role in early exploration around Lake Louise and Banff, where he made a number of first ascents and helped map and describe the region for later visitors. I couldn’t confirm a suitable portrait image from the sources I checked, so none is included here.
