Known for vivid first-hand accounts of the First World War in the Middle East, this British war correspondent brought Allenby’s Palestine campaign to life for readers at home. His books combine eyewitness reporting with a clear, energetic style that still feels immediate today.

by W. T. (William Thomas) Massey
W. T. Massey, or William Thomas Massey, was a British war correspondent and author best known for writing about the First World War campaigns in Egypt and Palestine. Contemporary records and later library listings connect him with The Desert Campaigns, How Jerusalem Was Won, and Allenby’s Final Triumph.
His work grew out of reporting from the field. Archive and reference sources describe The Desert Campaigns as written while he was serving as an official correspondent of London newspapers with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, and other historical references identify him as the Daily Telegraph's correspondent in Palestine.
What makes Massey interesting today is the blend of journalism and history in his books. He wrote close to the events themselves, giving readers a front-row view of military campaigning in the desert while also preserving details that later histories often smooth over.
