About the author

Born in Groote Lindt in 1867 and later based in Dordrecht, Willem Schippers came from a working-class background and spent years as a smith’s helper, machine-factory worker, and metal turner. He educated himself in the evenings, developing the reading and writing life that would eventually shape his career.

Schippers became known for a large body of Protestant Christian fiction, including children’s books and family novels. Sources consistently describe him as a prolific writer, with more than 45 books published, and his work was valued for its accessible style, moral focus, and close attention to ordinary people and daily struggles.

That combination of lived experience and simple, steady storytelling helped his books find a wide audience. Even now, he is remembered as a much-loved Dutch popular author whose stories of faith, family, and perseverance continued to be reprinted and read well after his death in 1954.
