About the author

Born in Great Yarmouth in 1868, William Plane Pycraft built his career around the close study of animal anatomy. He worked with the zoologist Edwin Ray Lankester and later joined the staff of the British Museum (Natural History), where he became closely associated with osteology, the study of bones.

Pycraft is especially remembered for his writing on birds and for popular natural history books that helped bring scientific ideas to a broader audience. Alongside more technical work, he wrote lively, accessible books on evolution, courtship in animals, and the natural world, showing a knack for combining careful observation with clear explanation.

He died in 1942, but his work still reflects a moment when museum science, evolutionary thought, and public curiosity about nature were deeply intertwined. For listeners interested in classic natural history, his books offer both period charm and a serious enthusiasm for how animals are built and how they live.
