Writing under the name W. O. von Horn, Friedrich Wilhelm Philipp Oertel was born on August 15, 1798, in Horn in the Hunsrück region and died on October 14, 1867, in Wiesbaden. He was a German Protestant pastor as well as a widely read author of popular and youth literature.
His books and stories were shaped by a strong interest in reaching common readers with clear, engaging storytelling. That mix of pastoral work and accessible writing helped him build a reputation as a moral storyteller whose works were meant to instruct as well as entertain.
Today he is remembered mainly under his pen name, which became better known than his birth name, and as part of the tradition of 19th-century German religious and popular writing.
