About the author

Born in Calcutta in 1866, William Oscar Emil Oesterley became an Anglican clergyman and a respected scholar of Hebrew and the Old Testament. He later taught at King's College London, where he served as professor of Hebrew and Old Testament from 1926.

Oesterley wrote across a remarkably wide range of subjects, including biblical commentary, Christian doctrine, Judaism, ancient Israel, and the Apocrypha. His work is especially associated with the study of Jewish background and influence in early Christianity, and he published many books that helped general readers as well as students engage more deeply with biblical texts.

He died in 1950. Remembered as both priest and scholar, he stands out for combining serious academic study with an interest in how ancient religious traditions could still speak to modern readers.
