About the author

W. Keith Leask, born William Keith Leask in Aberdeen in 1857, was a Scottish writer, biographer, and classics lecturer. He studied at the University of Aberdeen and at Oxford, and he was associated with the University of Aberdeen as a teacher of classics.

His writing ranged across biography, literary history, and classical subjects. He is especially remembered for short, readable studies of notable Scots, including James Boswell and Hugh Miller, works that helped introduce historical and literary figures to a wider audience.

Leask also contributed essays and editorial work after returning to Aberdeen in the 1890s. He died there in 1925, leaving behind a body of nonfiction shaped by scholarship but written for general readers.
