About the author

Born in Forest Hill, London, in 1872, William Henry Koebel was an English author and businessman. He became known for writing about Portugal in his earlier years and later turned his attention to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

Koebel's books often blended travel observation with commerce, politics, and history. Sources describe him as someone who also worked to expand British trade in Latin America, with particular success in Chile and the port of Valparaiso. Among the works still easy to find today are South America and Uruguay, both preserved through Project Gutenberg.

He died in 1923. Although he is not a household name now, his books remain useful to readers interested in how the English-speaking world once described Iberia and Latin America in the early 20th century.
