About the author

Publishing as W. H. Hamilton Rogers, William Henry Hamilton Rogers was an English historian and antiquarian associated with Colyton in Devon. He became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and was especially known for studying the West Country, with a focus on Devon, Somerset, and Dorset.

His work explored regional history through churches, monuments, noble families, and old traditions. Among the books linked with him are Memorials of the West, The Strife of the Roses and Days of the Tudors in the West, and The Antient Sepulchral Effigies and Monumental and Memorial Sculpture of Devon. He also frequently worked with the illustrator Roscoe Gibbs, which helped give his historical writing a vivid visual character.

Some library records list his dates as 1828–1913, but the biographical source I found gives 1 October 1834 – 20 November 1913. What is clear across sources is that he spent his career preserving the people, places, and memorials of the West of England for later readers.
