by W. G. (William Gregory) Wood-Martin
Born in County Sligo on 16 July 1847, William Gregory Wood-Martin became known as an antiquarian, archaeologist, folklorist, historian, and author. Reliable reference sources describe him as especially associated with the study of Ireland’s past, and particularly with the history and archaeology of Sligo.
He is best remembered for works such as History of Sligo, County and Town and Traces of the Elder Faiths of Ireland, books that brought together local history, field observation, and Irish folk tradition. His career also included military service, and he is often referred to as Colonel William Gregory Wood-Martin.
Wood-Martin died on 16 November 1917. More than a century later, his books are still valued by readers interested in Irish archaeology, folklore, and the layered history of the northwest of Ireland.
