About the author

Born on June 7, 1809, William Forbes Skene was a Scottish lawyer, historian, antiquary, and Celtic scholar. He was the son of James Skene of Rubislaw, a friend of Sir Walter Scott, and he built a distinguished career while pursuing a deep interest in Scotland’s early past.

Skene is especially known for major historical works including The Highlanders of Scotland, editions of old Celtic texts, and the influential multi-volume Celtic Scotland. His research focused on early Scottish kingdoms, Gaelic tradition, and the historical sources behind Scotland’s national story, and he became one of the best-known scholars in that field during the 19th century.

Alongside his writing, he was recognized by learned societies and public institutions for his scholarship. He died on August 29, 1892, leaving behind work that remained important to historians of medieval Scotland and Celtic studies long after his lifetime.
