Born in 1809, he was a Scottish lawyer, historian, and antiquary who developed an early interest in Gaelic language and Celtic literature. Alongside his legal career, he built a reputation as one of the key nineteenth-century interpreters of Scotland’s early past.
His best-known works include The Highlanders of Scotland, Celtic Scotland, and The Four Ancient Books of Wales. These studies drew on chronicles, genealogies, and old poetic material to explore the history of the Highlands, the Scottish clans, and the wider Celtic world.
He died in Edinburgh in 1892, but his work remained influential for later historians of Scotland, even when some of his conclusions were debated or revised. For readers interested in early Scotland, clan history, and Celtic tradition, he remains an important and fascinating guide.
