Born in Ballymena in 1806, he became a minister in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and later built a long academic career as a professor of church history and pastoral theology in Belfast. He is especially remembered as a church historian, and reference sources consistently describe him as one of the key Presbyterian historical writers of his time.

Much of his writing focused on Irish church history and Presbyterian identity. Among the works associated with him are The Ecclesiastical History of Ireland, History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and the memoir Reminiscences of a Long Life, published near the end of his life.

He died in 1902 after a career that connected ministry, teaching, and historical writing. For listeners coming to him through older religious or historical works, he stands out as an author whose books were shaped by both deep learning and direct involvement in the world he described.
