A historian and educator at Stellenbosch University, he helped bring older Cape travel accounts and literary sources to new readers in Afrikaans. His work opened a window onto early South African history for students and general readers alike.
Willem Blommaert was a historian born in 1886 who taught at the University of Stellenbosch. In the 1922 volume Uit ou Reisbeskrywinge: Dagverhale en ander letterkundige bronne oor die Kaap, he is identified, alongside S. F. N. Gie, as one of the professors of history at the university.
That book remains the work most clearly linked to him in the sources I found. It was edited for schools and general readers and gathers older travel writing and other literary material about the Cape, making rare or hard-to-find texts more accessible in Afrikaans.
Reference records also identify him as Willem Blommaert (1886–1934). Beyond that, the available sources in this search were quite sparse, so it is safest to remember him as a scholar who helped preserve and share historical writing about the Cape for a wider reading public.
