von der Vogelweide Walther

Walther von der Vogelweide was a Middle High German poet and Minnesänger active around 1170 to 1230. Much about his life remains uncertain, but he is generally seen as the outstanding lyric poet of medieval German literature, celebrated for both love songs and more public, argumentative verse.

His poems go beyond the polished conventions of courtly love. Alongside famous Minnesang, he wrote political and moral songs that engaged with the conflicts of his time, giving his work an unusual range and energy. That mix of musical grace, wit, and strong opinion helped make him a lasting model for later German literature.

Because so little documentary evidence survives, parts of his biography are reconstructed from his own poems and later tradition. Even so, his reputation has endured for centuries, and he is still remembered as one of the clearest and most compelling voices of the High Middle Ages.
