About the author

Walther von der Vogelweide was a Middle High German poet and Minnesinger who lived around 1170 to about 1230. Much about his life is uncertain, but standard reference sources agree that he was one of the most important lyric poets of the Middle Ages, known for both love songs and political verse.

Unlike many poets remembered mainly for one mode, his work moved across courtly love lyrics, reflective poems, and public commentary on the political struggles of his time. That mix helped give his writing a broader human feel, and later readers often saw him as the finest German lyric poet before Goethe.

Because records from his lifetime are limited, parts of his biography remain debated, including details of his birthplace and later years. Even so, his surviving songs made a lasting mark on German literature, and he remains one of the central voices of medieval European poetry.
