About the author

Born in Piacenza in 1860 and later active in Bologna, Vittorio Fiorini was an Italian historian whose work ranged from the Middle Ages to the Risorgimento. He is especially associated with the renewed edition of Muratori’s Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, a major scholarly project linked with Giosuè Carducci.

Alongside his research, he built a substantial public career. Sources describe him as serving in the Italian Ministry of Public Instruction, including as central inspector and later director general of secondary education, and he eventually became a member of the Corte dei Conti. He was also elected to the Accademia dei Lincei.

Fiorini’s writing reflects a broad interest in Italian national history, and he helped shape historical publishing through projects such as the Biblioteca storica del Risorgimento italiano. He died in Bologna in 1925, leaving behind a reputation as a careful scholar and an important organizer of historical studies in Italy.
