About the author

Born in São João da Pesqueira and later educated in England, the Visconde de Soveral earned a degree in letters from the University of London. He went on to build a career as both a man of letters and a diplomat, a mix that shaped much of his later writing.

He entered the diplomatic service in 1839 and served in London and Madrid. In 1856 he was appointed ambassador to Brazil but did not take up the post; instead, he became ambassador in Madrid in 1857, later carried out a special mission in Paris, and retired from diplomacy in 1866. He was made Visconde de Soveral by decree of King Luís I in 1865.

After retiring, he lived in Lisbon and published a range of historical and cultural works. His books include studies on the Portuguese in Abyssinia, Portugal’s old political and commercial relations with Venice, the sea route to India, painting, and Portuguese tilework, showing a broad curiosity about diplomacy, history, and the arts.
