About the author

Born Virna Stanton in Cobourg, Ontario, Virna Sheard became a Canadian poet and novelist whose work appeared from the late 1890s onward. She was educated in Cobourg and Toronto, married Dr. Charles Sheard, and raised four sons while building a literary career.

She published both poetry and fiction, and her writing was known for its gentle musicality and emotional directness. Alongside her books, she also contributed poems and stories to magazines, helping her reach readers during a period when Canadian literature was still finding a wider audience.

Sheard died in 1943. Although her name is not as widely known today as some of her contemporaries, she remains an interesting figure in early Canadian literature for the way she balanced domestic life with a steady, heartfelt body of work.
