Virna Sheard

Born Virna Stanton in Cobourg, Ontario, Virna Sheard became known as a Canadian poet and novelist whose writing often centered on domestic life, grief, devotion, and human kindness. She was educated in Cobourg and Toronto, married Dr. Charles Sheard, and published both fiction and poetry over the course of her literary career.

Sheard is especially remembered for her poems, which were noted for their sympathy, accessibility, and emotional sincerity rather than showy technique. Alongside her poetry, she also wrote novels, and her work found a broad readership in Canada during her lifetime.

She died in 1943. Although she is less widely known today than some of her contemporaries, she remains a distinctive voice in Canadian literature, especially for readers drawn to reflective, heartfelt writing.
