About the author

Born in Venice on October 16, 1823, Vincenzo Lazari was an Italian numismatist, archaeologist, and art writer. He came from a family of Greek origin long settled in Venice, studied first in Venice and later in Padua, and devoted himself to historical research alongside formal legal studies.

Lazari became an important figure in Venetian cultural life and served as director of the Museo Correr. He wrote about the museum's holdings in Notizie delle opere d'arte e di antichità della raccolta Correr di Venezia, helping record works of art and antiquities for future readers. He also wrote on social and historical subjects, including a study of slavery in medieval Venice.

He is remembered above all for his numismatic scholarship. Works such as Le monete dei possedimenti veneziani di oltremare e di terraferma and his studies of mints and coins in different Italian regions made him a respected authority in the field. Though he died young in Venice on March 25, 1864, his research continued to matter to historians of Venice, museums, and coinage.
