About the author

Born in Copenhagen on January 16, 1852, Vilhelm Østergaard grew up in difficult circumstances after his father's death interrupted his schooling. He worked from a young age, first in office jobs and later in journalism, before building a long career as a writer and editor.

Østergaard began publishing fiction in the late 1870s and became known for historical novels and popular narratives, including works on Danish themes and figures such as Tycho Brahe. He also worked as an editor and literary mediator, helping present Danish literature to general readers through anthologies, reference works, and publishing projects.

He was active in Danish literary life for decades and was eventually given the honorary title of professor. He died in Copenhagen on November 10, 1928, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both his love of storytelling and his interest in Denmark's cultural history.
