About the author

Born in 1852, Vilhelm Østergaard built a long career as a Danish author and journalist. He wrote for newspapers including Nationaltidende, Berlingske Tidende, and Dagens Nyheder, mainly covering cultural life, and he published across an unusually broad mix of genres.

He made his literary debut in 1879 with the short-story collection Fra ulige steder. Over the years he went on to write novels, poetry, memoirs, biographies, textbooks, and retellings of fairy tales and legends, showing a talent for both creative writing and popular literary education.

Østergaard was later given the honorary title of professor, and he also received Danish honors including the Order of the Dannebrog. He died in 1928, remembered as a versatile literary figure who helped document and share Denmark’s literary heritage.
