author
A little-known 19th-century Spanish writer, he is remembered mainly for historical novels set in medieval Castile. Much of his life remains a mystery, which gives his surviving work an added air of curiosity.

by Víctor África Bolangero
Almost nothing certain is known about this 19th-century Spanish author, who is often referred to simply as Bolangero or by the form V. A. Bolangero. Even basic biographical details such as his birth and death dates do not appear to be firmly documented.
He is associated above all with historical fiction. Among the works linked to him are Fernando IV de Castilla, o dos muertes a un tiempo and Alonso, el Onceno; o, Quince años después, novels that look back to medieval Castile and show the strong 19th-century taste for dramatized national history.
Because so little is known about his personal life, his profile today comes mostly through library records, digital editions, and brief reference entries rather than detailed biographies. That uncertainty makes him one of those authors whose books have outlasted the facts of the life behind them.
