About the author

Born in 1894, he became known as an English journalist, author, and broadcaster with a strong interest in international affairs. Early in his career he worked in journalism and later served as director of the London office of the League of Nations, experience that helped shape his reporting and political outlook.

He built a reputation as a foreign and diplomatic correspondent, especially through his work for the News Chronicle. During the tense years before and during the Second World War, he was one of the public voices warning about developments in Europe, and he became well known for making complicated foreign policy issues easier for a general audience to follow.

He also entered Parliament, serving as an MP from 1938 to 1950, at different times as an Independent Progressive and for the Common Wealth Party. Alongside his journalism and politics, he wrote books and remained active in public life for decades, leaving behind a career that joined reporting, commentary, and public service.
