About the author

Usually placed sometime between the 3rd and 5th centuries CE, Vatsyayana is known above all for the Kama Sutra, a Sanskrit text that became one of the most famous works associated with classical India. Although often reduced to its erotic passages in popular culture, the book is much broader in scope, covering relationships, social customs, marriage, and the aims of a well-lived life.

Very little is known for certain about Vatsyayana as a historical person. Traditional accounts link him to the intellectual world of ancient India, but modern biographical details are scarce, so much of his identity remains uncertain. What has endured is the influence of the work itself, which has been translated, debated, and reinterpreted for centuries.

Today, Vatsyayana is remembered less as a biographical figure than as the name attached to a remarkably durable text. The Kama Sutra continues to attract readers not only for its reputation, but also for what it reveals about intimacy, etiquette, and everyday life in the classical Indian world.
