1860–1920
Best known for the mischievous world of Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca, this Italian writer brought humor, sharp observation, and a real feel for childhood into his stories. He also worked as a journalist and illustrator, giving his books an especially lively voice.
Born Luigi Bertelli in Florence on March 19, 1860, he wrote under the pen name Vamba. He became known in Italy as a writer, journalist, and illustrator, building a career that mixed satire, storytelling, and a close interest in the everyday lives of young readers.
Vamba is most closely linked with children's literature, especially Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca, the story of an unruly boy whose diary-style adventures made the character famous. He also wrote other works for children, including Ciondolino, and his playful, observant style helped his books stay popular well beyond his lifetime.
Alongside his literary work, he was active in newspapers and magazines, and that journalistic energy shows in the quick wit and social humor of his writing. He died in Florence on November 27, 1920, but he is still remembered as one of the most distinctive Italian authors for young readers of his era.
