About the author

Born Luigi Bertelli in Florence in 1860, Vamba was an Italian writer, journalist, and illustrator best remembered by his pen name. He took that name from the jester in Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, and it suited the playful, irreverent tone that made his work stand out.

He worked across literature and journalism, writing for young readers as well as the wider public. His best-known creation is Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca, a comic and enduring classic about an unruly boy whose adventures have stayed popular in Italy for generations.

Vamba died in 1920, but his work still has a special place in Italian children’s literature. His stories mix warmth, wit, and a fond understanding of youthful chaos, which helps explain why readers continue to return to them.
