by Valfrid Vasenius
Born in Helsinki on October 12, 1848, Gustaf Valfrid Vasenius was a Finland-Swedish librarian, literary historian, and university teacher. He worked at a time when literary studies were becoming more established in Finland, and he built a reputation as a careful scholar with a strong interest in Nordic literature.
He is particularly associated with research on some of Finland's best-known writers, including Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Zacharias Topelius. Alongside his scholarly writing, he also worked in libraries, linking academic study with the preservation and organization of books and literary culture.
Vasenius died in Helsinki on May 31, 1928. Though not as widely known today as the authors he studied, his work helped document and interpret an important part of Finnish and Swedish-language literary history.
