About the author

Born in Helsinki on October 12, 1848, Valfrid Vasenius was a Finnish literary historian, critic, and academic best known for his work on Finnish and Nordic literature. He became one of the most important Finnish scholars of Nordic literary history in his era, and his writing focused especially on major authors such as Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Zacharias Topelius.

Vasenius worked in several roles at the University of Helsinki over the course of his career. He served as a docent in aesthetics and literary history, held positions at the university library, and later taught as professor of Finnish and Nordic literary history. Alongside his academic work, he also contributed to the development of Finland's library world and was known as a thoughtful advocate of scholarly study and liberal intellectual life.

He died in Helsinki on May 31, 1928. Remembered for a large body of literary-historical writing, Vasenius stands out as a careful interpreter of Nordic letters and as one of the key figures who helped establish literary history as a serious field of study in Finland.
