A lawyer, journalist, and political thinker from Barcelona, he became one of the key early voices of modern Catalanism. His writing joined cultural revival with sharp political argument, helping shape debates about Catalan identity in the late 19th century.
Born in Barcelona on March 8, 1841, Valentí Almirall i Llozer was a Catalan lawyer, journalist, and politician. He is widely remembered as one of the foundational figures of modern Catalanism, especially for giving it a more progressive and political direction rather than treating it only as a cultural movement.
Almirall took part in the intellectual life of the Renaixença, the 19th-century revival of Catalan language and culture, but he also pushed beyond literary renewal into public action. Through journalism, civic activity, and political organizing, he argued that Catalonia needed its own modern political voice within Spain.
He is also known for his influential book Lo Catalanisme (1886), which helped define the ideas of the movement for later generations. He died in Barcelona on June 20, 1904, but his work remained an important reference point for the history of Catalan political thought.
