A key early voice in modern Catalan nationalism, he helped turn cultural revival into a political movement. Lawyer, journalist, and activist, he pushed for a more federal and self-governing vision of Catalonia within Spain.
Born in Barcelona on March 8, 1841, Valentí Almirall i Llozer was a lawyer, journalist, and political thinker who became one of the central figures of nineteenth-century Catalanism. He is widely remembered as an early architect of modern Catalan nationalism, especially its progressive and federalist strand.
Almirall first took part in republican and federal politics before focusing more directly on Catalan public life. He promoted Catalan language and identity not only as cultural matters, but as the basis for political organization and self-government. His writing and activism helped shape the movement in its formative years, and his book Lo catalanisme is often cited as one of his most influential works.
He spent most of his life in Barcelona, where he was born and where he died on June 20, 1904. More than a century later, he remains an important figure for readers interested in the history of Catalonia, political thought, and the roots of modern regional nationalism in Spain.
