About the author

Born in Myrskylä on February 29, 1880, Väinö William Salminen was a Finnish scholar of folk poetry and folklore. He became an important figure in the study of oral tradition and later served as professor of folk poetry studies at the University of Helsinki.

Salminen is remembered as a prolific collector and researcher of folklore. His work emphasized not just the texts themselves, but also the performers, the situations in which poems were recited, and the wider cultural setting around them. That approach helped deepen the understanding of Finnish and related Finno-Ugric oral traditions.

He died in Helsinki on July 20, 1947. In addition to his academic career, his published works have kept his research accessible to later readers interested in folklore, traditional poetry, and cultural history.
