A major Soviet and Russian mathematician, he wrote influential books that helped bring advanced ideas in mathematical physics and analysis to a wide audience. His work is closely linked with generalized functions, quantum field theory, and p-adic analysis.

by V. Vladimirov
Born on January 9, 1923, Vasily Sergeyevich Vladimirov was a Soviet and Russian mathematician whose research ranged across number theory, mathematical physics, numerical analysis, several complex variables, and p-adic analysis. He became especially well known for work on generalized functions and for books that connected deep mathematics with problems in physics.
He studied at Moscow State University and later worked at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics. Over a long career, he produced widely cited research and textbooks, including works on generalized functions in mathematical physics that were translated and read internationally.
Vladimirov died on November 3, 2012. He is remembered both as a researcher of remarkable breadth and as an author who helped generations of readers approach difficult mathematical ideas with clarity.
