Born in Milan on January 30, 1825, Vittore Ottolini was an Italian historian, journalist, writer, playwright, and soldier. He took part in the upheavals of the Risorgimento, fighting in the Five Days of Milan in 1848 and later helping defend the Roman Republic in 1849.

After those early revolutionary years, he built a varied literary career. He wrote historical works, journalism, comedies, and fiction, and is remembered as a lively public-minded author whose interests stretched from politics and military life to local history and culture.

Ottolini died in Milan on November 10, 1892. Today he is often associated with writing that captures the patriotic spirit of 19th-century Italy, especially the world of Milan and the generation shaped by the struggle for national independence.
