About the author
The Faculty of Theology of Paris was one of the four traditional faculties of the historic University of Paris, long associated with the Sorbonne and with the university’s reputation as a major center of medieval learning. Theology was especially central to the university’s identity, helping make Paris one of Europe’s most influential places for religious scholarship.
The faculty was closed in 1793 during the French Revolution. It was re-established in 1808 as the Catholic theology faculty of Paris within the French imperial university system, and a Protestant theology faculty was added in 1877.
Its institutional life did not last unchanged into the modern era: the Catholic faculty was abolished in 1885, while later theological teaching in Paris continued through other institutions. Today, its legacy survives mainly through the wider history of the University of Paris, the Sorbonne, and later theological schools in the city.
