About the author

Born in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, on 8 May 1872, she went on to build a long writing career that stretched from the 1890s into the 20th century. Her first novel, The Enchanter, appeared in 1899, and she eventually published around 40 books, mainly novels, along with short stories and some nonfiction.

Her fiction is often described as middlebrow, but that label only tells part of the story. Again and again, her books center on resourceful women and the pressures of work, family, money, and social expectation. She also wrote beyond straightforward domestic fiction: The Affairs of John Bolsover is noted for its speculative twist and its interest in women and political power.

Silberrad died in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, on 1 September 1955. Although she is less widely read today than some of her contemporaries, her work offers a lively window into popular British fiction of her era and into the kinds of intelligent, determined female characters that readers still enjoy.
