A Baltic German poet and writer of the Romantic era, he is remembered for lyrical verse and for vivid travel writing about Courland. Alongside his literary work, he also held important legal and administrative posts in Mitau and Pilten.
Born on May 18, 1774, on an estate in Courland, Ulrich Hermann Heinrich Gustav Freiherr von Schlippenbach belonged to the Baltic German nobility. He studied law and the humanities in Königsberg and Leipzig, and his life moved between public service and literature.
He served in several official roles, including as a legal and court official in Mitau and as a regional administrator connected with Pilten. At the same time, he built a reputation as a poet, writer, and editor during the Romantic period.
Schlippenbach was especially known in his day for his poetry and for Malerische Wanderungen durch Kurland ("Picturesque Wanderings through Courland"), a travel work that helped capture the landscape and cultural atmosphere of the region. He died in Mitau on March 20, 1826.
