About the author

Born in 1774 on the family estate of Groß-Wormsahten in Courland, Ulrich von Schlippenbach came from a Baltic German noble family. He studied in Leipzig and Jena, and later served for a time in Russian military and civil roles before turning more fully toward literary work.

He became known as a writer, dramatist, and translator. His books included novels, stories, and travel-related writing, and he also helped bring other European works into German. That mix of original writing and translation gives him the feel of a bridge figure: someone connecting the Baltic world he came from with the broader literary culture of his day.

Schlippenbach died in 1826. Though he is not widely read now, he remains an interesting figure from the German-language literature of the early 1800s, especially for readers curious about Baltic German cultural history.
