About the author

Born in Gleiwitz in 1850 and later active in Berlin, she was a German Jewish playwright, novelist, and journalist who also wrote under the names Ulla Frank and Ulrich Frank. Those pen names can make her easy to mistake for a male author, but the historical record identifies Ulrich Frank as one of her pseudonyms.

She built a varied literary career, writing fiction and drama as well as journalistic pieces. Her stories often drew on Jewish life and social experience, and at least some of her work traveled beyond German-speaking audiences through English translation, including Simon Eichelkatz; The Patriarch. Two Stories of Jewish Life.

She died in 1924. Today, she remains an interesting rediscovery for readers interested in German-Jewish literature, women writing under pen names, and authors whose work moved between popular storytelling and cultural observation.
