Born in Apolda, Germany, on January 8, 1860, Udo Dammer became a botanist with a strong interest in horticulture as well as entomology. He is best known as Carl Lebrecht Udo Dammer, and his botanical author abbreviation is simply Dammer.

Dammer worked as a curator at the Berlin Botanical Garden and wrote extensively about plants. His books and articles covered subjects such as palms, orchids, houseplants, and plant collecting, showing a talent for making specialist knowledge useful to working gardeners and general readers alike.

He died on November 15, 1920, in Großrambin near Kołobrzeg. Though not widely known outside botanical circles today, his name remains part of the scientific record through the plant descriptions and horticultural writing he left behind.
