About the author

Writing under the name Tine van Berken, Anna Christina Witmond-Berkhout was born in Amsterdam on September 29, 1870, and died there on December 7, 1899. In a very short life, she became a popular Dutch author of children's books, especially stories for girls.

Between 1894 and 1899, she published many books and built a wide readership. Sources from Dutch literary reference projects describe her as a star author for her publisher, with large print runs for both girls' books and picture books. She also founded the magazine Lente: Weekblad voor jonge dames in 1899, showing how active she was not only as a novelist but also as an editor shaping reading for young women.

Her career ended suddenly when she died at just 29, but her work remained well known enough to attract later literary attention and reprints. She is remembered as one of the notable Dutch writers of children's literature at the end of the nineteenth century.
