About the author

Born in 1783, Timothy East was an English dissenting minister and religious writer. Reliable biographical records identify him as a Congregational pastor educated at Gosport Academy, with ministry posts including Frome, Birmingham, Ovenden, and Paignton.

He is especially associated with Ebenezer Chapel in Birmingham, where he served during an important stretch of his career. East also published a number of devotional and religious works, including The Evangelical Rambler, Pastoral Recollections and Sketches, and The Sheepfold and the Common, writing in a practical style aimed at everyday Christian readers.

East died in 1871. Although not widely known today, his books preserve the voice of a working pastor whose writing grew out of sermons, pastoral visits, and the religious life of nineteenth-century nonconformist England.
