About the author

Born in Dublin in 1816, Thomas Oldham studied at Trinity College Dublin and later trained in engineering and geology in Edinburgh. Early in his career he worked on the ordnance survey in Ireland, where his geological work quickly earned attention.

Oldham went on to become an important figure in Victorian geology. He was appointed the first superintendent of the Geological Survey of India, where he expanded the survey's work and encouraged major studies of India's geology, mineral resources, and fossils. He also helped launch Palaeontologia Indica, a landmark scientific publication series.

He remained closely associated with geological research until poor health led to his retirement, and he died in 1878. Today he is remembered not only for his own scientific work, but also for helping build institutions that shaped the study of geology in South Asia.
