About the author

Born in 1816, this Anglo-Irish geologist became an important figure in Victorian science through his work in both Britain and India. He studied at Trinity College Dublin and was active in geology early in his career, gaining recognition for his scientific skill and fieldwork.

He is best known for serving as the first superintendent of the Geological Survey of India. In that role, he helped organize and expand geological research across the region, encouraging the study of mineral resources, rock formations, and fossils. His efforts played a major part in establishing geology as a serious scientific and practical enterprise in India.

Oldham died in 1878, but his influence continued through the institutions he helped build and the scientific work he supported. He is also remembered as the father of Richard Dixon Oldham, another notable geologist, which makes his family name especially significant in the history of earth science.
