About the author

Born in Duns, Berwickshire, in November 1772, he studied at the University of Edinburgh and went on to become a minister in Edinburgh. He is generally identified as a leading figure in the Original Secession Church and was known both for preaching and for his historical writing.

He is best remembered as the author of influential religious biographies, especially The Life of John Knox (1813) and The Life of Andrew Melville (1819). Those books combined careful historical research with a lively narrative style, making major Reformation leaders feel immediate and human to ordinary readers.

He died on August 5, 1835. Though rooted in the theological debates of his own time, his reputation has lasted mainly through his work as an ecclesiastical historian and biographer, especially for readers interested in Scottish church history and the Reformation.
