About the author

Born in 1834 in Hartford, Connecticut, Thomas McManus is remembered as a Union Army officer and veteran writer. Contemporary historical sources identify him as a major in the 25th Connecticut Volunteers during the American Civil War, and later accounts note that he remained a respected figure in Hartford until his death in 1914.

McManus is best known as one of the contributors to The Twenty-fifth Regiment Connecticut Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion (1913). In that volume, he provided an extended account of the Battle of Irish Bend, helping turn personal memory and military experience into a record for later readers.

Although not a widely known literary figure, his work has lasting value for listeners interested in memoir, local history, and the Civil War. What stands out most is the sense of immediacy: this is writing shaped by someone who was there and wanted the regiment’s story to be remembered.
