A Philadelphia lawyer with an artist’s eye, he turned a trip through England’s legal world into a lively, observant book. His work offers a rare American view of British courts just before the First World War.

by Thomas Leaming
Born in Philadelphia in 1858, Thomas Leaming was an American lawyer and writer. Library and book records confirm him as the author of A Philadelphia Lawyer in the London Courts (1911), a work published shortly before his death that draws on his experiences studying English legal practice.
Leaming was more than a legal observer. Contemporary catalog records note that the book was illustrated by the author, and auction records and family-history sources also point to his activity as an amateur artist. That mix of law and visual detail helps explain the book’s appeal: it is practical, curious, and shaped by someone who noticed people as well as procedures.
He died in Philadelphia in 1911. Although not widely known today, Leaming left behind an engaging snapshot of transatlantic legal culture, seen through the eyes of a thoughtful American visitor.
