Thomas Green Fessenden

1771–1837

A sharp-tongued early American writer, editor, and lawyer, he moved easily between satire and practical advice. He is especially remembered for the satirical voice of “Christopher Caustic” and for helping shape agricultural publishing through The New England Farmer.

About the author

Born in Walpole, New Hampshire, in 1771, he grew up on a farm and graduated from Dartmouth in 1796. Over the course of his career he worked as a lawyer, journalist, editor, and author in both England and the United States, building a reputation for lively, argumentative writing.

He became best known for his satirical works, especially those published under the pen name Christopher Caustic. His writing could be biting and political, but he also had a practical side: later in life he turned much of his attention to agriculture and rural life.

In 1822 he became founding editor of The New England Farmer in Boston, a publication that helped spread agricultural knowledge to a broad readership. He remained closely identified with that work until his death in 1837, leaving behind a career that joined wit, public debate, and everyday usefulness.
